MEET THE IH 2024 BOARD
International House’s Director, Dr Carla Tromans, has overall responsibility for the daily operation and administration of International House. Carla reports to the IH Board comprised of 10 to 12 individuals representing the university, IH Alumni, community groups, business, and government sectors. Two residents – the IH President and the Vice President of the IH Student Club represent the residents as observers of the Board.
The IH Board is responsible for setting the College vision and strategic direction as well as ensuring its long term financial sustainability.

PRESIDENT – MR DAVID JACKSON
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
David brings a broad range of experience in economics and finance that spans both the public and private sector. He has international experience working across areas such as corporate planning and strategy, commercial projects, economic analysis, and organisational change.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor of Business, Master of International Economics and Finance, GAICD Company Directors Course.
INTERESTS
Spending time with family, long distance running, languages (Japanese and Chinese).
DEPUTY PRESIDENT – MR KEITH STANLEY
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Keith has 44 years of commercial experience in companies like Harrods, IKEA, Flight Centre and NRMA. The last 15 years sharing his experience through consulting. Extensive experience as a CEO, Marketer, sales, and product leader in local and global; companies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Electronic Engineer, Harrods Executive Training Scheme, IKEA Key Guy Graduate, Member AICD, Certified Practicing Marketer (AMI), Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute.
INTERESTS
Bonsai (more an obsession), travel, music particularly jazz, photography, and red wine.
HONORARY TREASURER – MS MARYANNE JARDINE
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Maryanne has 18 years of accounting, finance, investment and insurance experience. She is a chartered accountant, with a depth and breadth in technical experience – with a Big 4 accounting background. Maryanne has strength in financial modelling for clients, management accounting and financial statements. Maryanne also has a Masters in Taxation, with expertise advising across multiple tax types.

INTERESTS
Tending to her veggie garden, playing basketball with her kids and neighbours, collecting books (and reading them when she has some rare free time)
HONORARY SECRETARY – MR NICK VINCENT
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Nick is the Founder of Tempt Marketing. He has over 25 years experience in marketing strategy, working with businesses and management teams to help them make better connections, develop new ideas & strategies and ultimately become more profitable.
QUALIFICATIONS
BSc, Psychology; Ass.Dip Bus., HR/IR; Masters, Marketing Management
INTERESTS
Family, golf, sailing, start-up’s.
UQ SENATE NOMINEE – MR DAVID LAVELL
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
David has 17 years’ experience in the management of Ethical Standards or Integrity Teams across government and UQ. He has significant experience in developing and delivering training programs targeting misconduct prevention and has presented at national level on fraud and research misconduct. Previously he was a Detective Senior Sergeant within the Qld Police Fraud Squad and directed a start up which developed and patented an innovative building product winning an Australian Design Award.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Policing, Dip. Justice Administration, Member AICD.
INTERESTS
David enjoys carpentry, camping, fishing and reading.
MEMBER – DR CARLA TROMANS
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Carla is the Director of International House and has been for over fifteen years. Carla has worked within education as a secondary teacher, Head of Department and Deputy Principal, across QLD and NT. In 2013 Carla was appointed to the UQ Senate (2014–2017).
QUALIFICATIONS
Ed D, Master of Educational Administration, Master of Education (Curriculum), Bachelor of Teaching, Diploma in Teaching and Teaching Certificate (Home Economics).
INTERESTS
Walking, travel, old movies, golf, fishing, guitar, reading, pilates and yoga.
MEMBER – MS SALLY NEWMAN
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Sally is a tax lawyer with over 20 years’ experience and has been recognised in Best Lawyers Australia for 6 years, including in the areas of tax and charities law. Sally has worked with a number of not for profits and has previously served on the executive of the Women Lawyers Association of QLD and IH Alumni Committee.
QUALIFICATIONS
BA/LLB; LLM UQ (Commercial Stream); Solicitor of the Supreme Court of QLD and the ACT; IH Alumnus (1996)
INTERESTS
Sally enjoys cooking, reading, travelling and spending time with her family. Three of Sally’s four siblings lived at IH Brisbane as well as her husband Sugath (1996-98)
MEMBER – MR RICK WILKINSON
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Rick has worked in the resources industry for more than 35 years. This took him to the Middle-East, north Africa and the USA, before returning to Australia. He has held positions from technical engineering, project management to commercial and strategic roles.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor of Science (Hons), Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors
INTERESTS
Road rallies, fishing and family. Rick grew up on a farm far from big cities, and still has a passion for most outdoor activities.
IHSC 2024 PRESIDENT – MISS AARSHIA AJOY
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Aarshia is completing a Bachelors of Speech Pathology at UQ having moved to IH from Dubai. She is looking to use her role as IHSC President to create opportunities for Housies to connect and make a strong and supportive resident community.
INTERESTS
Aarshia enjoys baking, playing ukulele and table-tennis. She also loves travelling, meeting new people and learning more about different cultures from around the world.
IHSC 2024 VICE PRESIDENT – MISS PARNIKA MAHAJAN
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Parnika moved to Brisbane from Melbourne in 2022 to complete her Bachelor of Biomedicine at UQ. She plans to help Housies make the most of college life and create a more involved community using her experience in college.
INTERESTS
Parnika enjoys painting, drawing and journaling. She is also fond of playing on the IH Basketball team and finding study spaces on the UQ campus.
IH MASTERS
Hon Jeffrey Spender
International House annually appoints a Master of the College, whose main role is ceremonial in chairing the Colleges’ Annual General Meeting. The current master is The Hon, Jeffrey Spender QC, former High Court Judge.

OUR FELLOWS
The position of Honorary Fellow was established by the International House Foundation Ltd Board to recognise those members of the college community who have distinguished themselves in service to IH and the community. Since 1965, these members have served the college collectively. They understand and have assisted in developing a “Community for Understanding”.
To be nominated as a fellow, the person must fall into one of the following categories and have regard to their association with IH:
- Outstanding academic or professional distinction;
- Outstanding service to the community;
- Outstanding service to IH; and/or
- Outstanding contribution to cultural diversity.
